About

The author of this report is a long time aficionado of smaller formula car motorsport.  First licensed in formula ford in the mid seventies.  Best results came in the mid eighties in Formula Continental.  San Francisco Regional and Northern Pacific Divisional titles in 1985 and 1986.  Long hiatus followed as career and child rearing obligations took precedence.

A couple of years or so ago got interested in the addition of the zetec zx3 power plant as an acceptable SCCA Formula Continental engine.  Wondered if it was still possible, in this current era, to go out to a junk yard, get a motor and build it up into a legal SCCA engine. The answer to the question is, “yes.”  This report is about what it took and what it cost to get to that answer.
